What is the ModelBEI project?

The project analyses improvements to public transport mobility in Vitoria-Gasteiz, with a particular focus on the electrification of Line 4. The work is structured around three main areas:

1. A study of the EIB line and its connection options with buses, trains and trams.

2. An analysis of traffic patterns and usage trends to understand urban and surrounding area travel patterns.

3. Operational modelling of Line 4 and fleet optimisation calculations to reduce waiting times and emissions.

The challenge: improving urban public transport

Improving public transport requires integrating different modes of transport, fine-tuning the day-to-day operation of the service and reducing the environmental impact of the fleet.

  • Connections between modes of transport

    The BEI line should be analysed alongside buses, trains and trams to identify connections and areas for improvement.

  • Optimisation of Line 4

    The operation of Line 4 needs to be modelled in detail in order to fine-tune frequencies, the fleet and actual service conditions.

  • Reduction in emissions

    The electrification of buses helps to reduce the amount of pollutants emitted by the fleet each year.

  • Reducing waiting times

    Better fleet planning helps to reduce waiting times and improve the user experience.

Project approach:

Urban mobility and decarbonisation

The study models the operation of Line 4 and assesses the impact of a BEB fleet. The results show potential reductions in CO₂, CO, NOx, VOCs and particulate matter, as well as improvements linked to service optimisation,
