What is the electric vehicle conversion scheme?

The project sets out a preliminary proposal for the future establishment of laboratories for converting combustion-engine vehicles to electric vehicles for environmental and experimental purposes. The work has focused on two main areas:

1.Drafting a report setting out a standardised safety procedure for the process of converting internal combustion engine vehicles to electric vehicles.

2. Producing and publishing scientific papers relating to the conversion to electric vehicles, efficiency and the electrification of the automotive sector.

The challenge: converting combustion-engine vehicles to electric vehicles

The conversion of vehicles requires suitable facilities, safe procedures and technical expertise to move towards a more decarbonised transport system.

  • Lack of space to house the laboratory

The planned project was scaled back to the preliminary design stage due to the lack of suitable premises in which to set up the laboratory.

  • The need for a safe procedure

Vehicle conversion requires standardised safety guidelines throughout the conversion process.

  • Potential for sustainable fleets

The future roll-out could prove useful for the vehicle fleets of public institutions and private companies.

  • Electrificación del sector de automoción

Electrical retrofitting is linked to new load demands, energy efficiency and technological adaptation.

Project approach:

The project combines technical work, safety and scientific research to lay the foundations for a future vehicle conversion workshop.

  • Standardised safety procedure
  • Electrification and efficiency in the automotive sector
  • Foundation for a future experimental laboratory

This approach enables us to move from the preliminary design towards potential actual implementation:

  • We have drawn up safety guidelines for converting combustion-engine vehicles to electric vehicles
  • We analyse aspects relating to electricity demand, chargers and efficiency
  • We produce publications and practical knowledge for the automotive sector
  • We make arrangements to ensure the project continues once a suitable venue is available

Project objectives:

To establish a technical and safety framework for the future roll-out of workshops specialising in converting combustion-engine vehicles to electric vehicles.

  • 1

    Drafting a safety procedure

  • 2

Prepare for the future roll-out of the laboratory

  • 3

    Promoting electrical retrofitting

  • 4

    Produce scientific publications

  • 5

    Evaluating applications in fleets

The solution: a technical framework for electrical retrofit laboratories

A preliminary project aimed at defining how to set up laboratories for the conversion of combustion-engine vehicles to electric vehicles in a safe and experimental manner.

Areas of development:

  • Safety procedure

  • Conversion to an electric vehicle

  • Demand for chargers

  • Demand forecasting

  • Fleet applications

Technological capabilities:

  • It sets out safe guidelines for the conversion process.

  • It guides the transition from combustion-engine vehicles to electric vehicles.

  • It analyses the electricity demand associated with vehicle chargers.

  • It supports demand forecasting models in the supply chain.

  • It outlines future applications in public and private fleets.

Actors involved

A team specialising in electrification, the automotive sector and sustainable mobility, carrying out technical work and scientific research geared towards future experimental applications.
